A Farewell Message from Principal Weymiller
As I write this final message as principal of Custer Elementary, my heart is full of gratitude.
Serving as your principal for the past seven years and concluding my 40-year career in education at Custer has been one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life. Together, we have celebrated successes, overcome challenges, supported one another through difficult times, and created a school community that is truly special.
When South Sound Magazine named Custer Elementary "Best in the South Sound" not once, but twice, it was a wonderful recognition of what we already knew: Custer is an extraordinary place. Our success has never been about a building or a program. It has always been about the people—our students, families, staff, and community members who show up each day with kindness, resilience, and a commitment to helping children thrive.
I leave retirement with a heart full of beautiful memories. I will remember the laughter in the hallways, the excitement of special events, the pride on students' faces when they accomplished something difficult, and the countless acts of kindness that make Custer such a remarkable place. I have been blessed to work alongside dedicated educators and supportive families who care deeply about children.
Most importantly, I will remember the students. Watching children learn, grow, overcome obstacles, and discover their strengths has been the greatest joy of my career.
Welcoming Custer's New Principal
I am delighted to officially welcome Megan Qualls as the next principal of Custer Elementary. Ms. Qualls comes to Custer from Dower Elementary and brings with her a strong commitment to students, families, and staff. I hold her in very high regard and am confident she will honor the traditions that make Custer special while leading the school into an exciting future.
I encourage you to warmly welcome Ms. Qualls and offer her the same partnership, trust, and support you have extended to me throughout the years. She is inheriting a wonderful school community, and I know she is eager to get to know each of you.
A Personal Note
Although I am retiring, I hope our paths will continue to cross. One of the greatest joys of being an educator is seeing what students become long after they leave elementary school.
I invite you to track me down when graduation day arrives and I will gladly respond to celebrate their accomplishment. There is nothing I enjoy more than hearing about the successes, adventures, and milestones of the students who have been part of my journey.
While I am excited for this next chapter, a piece of my heart will always remain at Custer.
Our Custer Culture
As I leave, I hope we continue to hold tightly to the values that have made Custer such a special place:
Everyone Belongs Here
We are one community, learning and growing together. We celebrate the diversity, talents, and experiences that strengthen us.
Come As You Are
You are welcome here, just as you are. Your presence matters.
Show Kindness
To yourself, to others, and to our staff. Custer shines brightest when we bring our best selves to each day.
Words Have Power
Whether spoken in person, shared over the phone, or posted online, our words shape our community. Let us choose words that uplift, encourage, and unite.
We Share Energy
Our staff pours their hearts into this work every day. Families and educators are partners, united by a common goal: helping children succeed.
As I say goodbye, please know how deeply grateful I am for the opportunity to have served this community. Thank you for your trust, your partnership, your support, and your love for children.
It has been an honor. It has been a privilege and the perfect way to conclude a career.
With gratitude and affection,
Kathryn Weymiller
